Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year and if you did are you still sticking to it? New research has revealed that the traditional resolution is out of vogue. According to Centrum, eight out of ten people in the UK didn’t bother making New Year’s resolutions for 2011, with most citing certainty in their failure to stick to it as the main reason not to bother. Of the 20 per cent who did make resolutions, health and wealth were the most popular themes.
There is something sad about the waning popularity of New Year’s resolutions, not just because it may mark the beginning of the end for this great tradition but because it shows a national reluctance to make a commitment. Even if you slip along the way, making a New Year’s resolution can be the first step towards a personal goal or project, the starting point for improving your lifestyle or health. Surely it is better to try and fail than not to try at all?
With the dreaded ‘blue Monday’ behind us (so called because it is said to be the most depressing day of the year), perhaps now would be a good time to make that resolution.
